Major Redevelopment Planned for Broad Street Mall

A decision has been made to clear the way for the major redevelopment of Broad Street Mall where more than 640 apartments will be built.

Plans for a major redevelopment of Broad Street Mall are underway, with over 640 apartments set to be built. The project, which received planning permission in April, will see the rear of the mall demolished, including eight rental units and parking spaces.

The Reading Borough Council has agreed to sell its 72-year lease of the car park to mall owners AEW, a decision made during a recent policy committee meeting. This redevelopment is part of the council's broader vision for the Minster Quarter, which aims to create over 1,200 homes, revitalise the Hexagon Theatre, and introduce new commercial and community spaces.

Eleanor Brough, the council’s Minster Quarter programme manager, highlighted that the development will result in the loss of around 330 parking spaces. However, the deal includes protections for public parking, ensuring 325 spaces remain available for at least 25 years, along with 30 rent-free spots for Hexagon and council employees.

Micky Leng, deputy leader of the council, noted that 100 parking spaces will be reserved for future residents, particularly key workers like health and social care staff. He emphasised that this parking is designated for council staff, not for councillors' personal use.

While some residents have expressed concerns over the loss of parking, Cllr Anne Thompson acknowledged that data showed the car park was rarely at full capacity. Council leader Liz Terry praised the effort involved in the redevelopment, stressing its importance for the area and the accessibility of The Hexagon.

The committee's decision to sell the car park lease was made in a private session, with the sale amount remaining undisclosed.
