The Palmer Tavern on Wokingham Road, close to the University of Reading Whiteknights campus, has applied to host live music, play recorded music and put on performances from 10am until midnight to help university societies meet later.
The pub dates to the 1870s and was once called The College Arms. It's within walking distance of Palmer Park and sits in an area where many students live.
A few years ago Greene King spent £360,000 on an upgrade, turning it into the first Nest pub. Since then it's become known for quizzes, pool tournaments and showing major football on its screens.
Landlady Samantha Lane says the application, submitted to Reading Borough Council, will enable games societies to continue their activities later and provide a safer local hub for students.
She has recently started sponsoring three of the uni societies: the pool society, the athletics society and the Bridges XI football team.
"This is not an opportunity to crank up the entertainment but an opportunity to keep on providing a safe hub and meeting place for our students, which is close to the university and their homes."
The Palmer Tavern is currently open Sunday to Thursday from 12pm to 11pm, and until 1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
