Celebrating the People Who Shaped Reading in 2025

Berkshire Culture Connect Year-End Reflection

As another remarkable year draws to a close, we take this moment to shine a light on some of the
individuals, groups, and organisations that have helped shape Reading in 2025. This is not a
ranking, and it is far from a complete list - Reading is full of everyday heroes, many working
quietly without spotlight. But these ten names and groups represent the spirit we want to
celebrate: kindness, creativity, commitment, and the belief that Reading thrives when its people
lift one another up.

Our hope is that by celebrating these change makers this Christmas, we encourage even more
collaboration, courage, and community work in 2026. These stories inspire the next generation
and remind us that Reading is at its best when everyone plays a part.

John Sykes Foundation – Lighting the Way for Communities

The John Sykes Foundation continues to be a powerhouse of compassion in Reading, supporting
countless local initiatives. This year, their generosity made a huge impact for the Sanctuary
Strikers, helping provide football boots and floodlights so more young people could train safely
and feel supported. Their work constantly uplifts families, strengthens grassroots projects, and
ensures that no community is left behind.

Pete Doyle founder of Peter Doyle Music Ltd has been officially crowned a Hero by Pride of
Reading—and deservedly so. His dedication to making music accessible, nurturing self-esteem,
and opening creative doors for people of all ages has left a deep mark on the town. Pete’s energy
is infectious, and his commitment continues to inspire anyone who believes in the power of
creativity to change lives.

Cllr Alice Mpofu-Coles – A Mayor Who Leads With Hope

The Mayor of Reading, Dr Alice Mpofu-Coles, has stood tall as the first Black woman Mayor, a leader, and a symbol of hope. Her passion for community shines through her support for addressing inequalities, particularly through the two charities close to her heart — Readifood and Utulivu Women’s Group.

Throughout 2025, she has championed unity, community cohesion, inclusiveness, kindness, compassion, and resilience — reminding us that leadership rooted in humanity can help a town thrive, grow, and prosper.

The University of Reading has continued to demonstrate what it means to be a good neighbour.
Their commitment to supporting the local community, engaging with international students, and
celebrating Reading’s cultural diversity has been powerful. Their efforts to champion the iconic

A Personal Note from Berkshire Culture Connect on B Radio

This year has also been incredibly special for myself, B Radio, Berkshire Culture Connect and the
team at World Groove CIC. Every Thursday, I have been drumming with extraordinary young
adults, their parents, and carers in the Whitley area. What started as a small idea has grown into a
joyful, welcoming community, filled with rhythm, laughter, and love.
This December, we’re proud to have released our very own Christmas song - available from
10th December - created together with heart, teamwork, and absolute enthusiasm.
I’m especially grateful to St Michael’s School on Dee Road, where I’ve been honoured to run
the after-school drumming club. The children have brought me endless happiness, creativity, and
energy. Being part of their musical journey has been one of my greatest gifts of 2025.

Looking Ahead to 2026

As we celebrate these ten incredible forces for good, we also remember the countless others
working tirelessly behind the scenes every day. If your name isn’t listed here, please know that
we see you, we appreciate you, and Reading would not be the same without you.
Let this Christmas be a reminder that community is built not by one, but by many - and Reading
is blessed with so many who care deeply.
Here’s to more collaboration, more creativity, more unity, and more impact in 2026.

Merry Christmas, Reading!

Thank you to everyone who has played a part in lifting our community this year.
I look forward to crossing paths at one of the Feel the Groove drumming circles, where
everyone - absolutely everyone - is welcome to perform, express, and find joy.
