Issues have been found with driving and parking restrictions that have been imposed throughout Reading.
Reading Borough Council has been facing issues with driving and parking restrictions in the area.
These regulations, known as traffic regulation orders (TROs), create bus and cycle lanes, enforce parking restrictions, and establish double yellow lines to prevent parking.
However, errors in several TROs were discovered last year, leading to the wrongful issuance of 6,136 penalty charge notices, which means refunds for those fined.
One of the problematic areas is the southbound bus lane on London Street, designed for buses but incorrectly signed to allow hackney taxis and cyclists. The council plans to fix this by changing the TRO to officially permit taxis and cyclists, with a consultation open until September 11.
Another issue involved 'split-use' parking bays in the town centre, where typographical errors caused confusion about parking rules. This has since been corrected after a public consultation ended on August 1.
Additionally, double yellow lines at Durham Close in Whitley were found to lack proper TRO coverage. Parking enforcement was halted, and the lines were removed following discussions with local councillors.
These TRO concerns will be discussed at the council's traffic management sub-committee meeting on September 11.
