Marjorie Webber, 97, delivered a standout speech at Binfield’s annual Parish Meeting. An active Women’s Institute member who runs Binfield’s Tea Club, she spoke warmly about the group’s continued success.
“We have managed to keep the tea club going for another happy year thanks to the support of Binfield Parish Council.
“This July, we’ve decided to take the plunge and go on a day trip to Southsea Beach by coach.
“We will enjoy fish and chips and ice cream and have a fun day out whatever the weather, but we’re keeping our fingers crossed for a nice sunny day.”
The tea club’s members are mostly over 90, with some “youngsters” still in their eighties. Despite their age, the group remains active and sociable, meeting regularly with members paying £2 per session, plus 50p for refreshments.
The WI is the Women’s Institute, the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK. More than 100 years old, it was originally set up to help improve women’s education and rural life. Today it promotes fun, friendship and activism and is open to women of all ages.
