Bracknell Labour Appoints New Deputy Leader

Bracknell Labour has picked Cllr Paul Bidwell as its new deputy party leader. He is expected to be formally elected deputy council leader at Bracknell Forest's annual meeting tomorrow, Wednesday, May 13.

Bidwell, who represents Easthampstead and Wildridings, will keep his cabinet role for adults, economy and regeneration. He replaces Cllr Guy Gillbe, who had been interim and did not seek a full term.

First elected to the borough council in a 2021 by-election, Bidwell has served on Bracknell Town Council since 2015 and stood as Labour's parliamentary candidate for Bracknell in 2017 and 2019.

His cabinet work includes developing the borough's first economic strategy, setting up a skills hub and introducing an asset management approach; his portfolio now includes adult social care.

Speaking after his election, Cllr Bidwell said: "This next year is not simply about managing challenges - it is about proving what this administration is capable of achieving together... showing leadership under pressure, standing united when others seek division, and delivering meaningful progress for residents."

Council leader Cllr Helen Purnell welcomed the appointment, praising his "experience, energy and strong record of service". At the same meeting, Cllr Purnell was re-elected unopposed as leader of the Labour Group.
