Bracknell MP's Ejection Sparks Conservative Embarrassment

The Bracknell Conservatives have said they were "embarrassed" after Peter Swallow, the Labour MP for Bracknell, was evicted from the House of Commons for interrupting Kemi Badenoch during Prime Minister's Questions on Wednesday, 11 March. He was asked to leave by the Speaker, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, as Mr Swallow was interrupting while Mrs Badenoch was speaking about British Armed Forces.

A Facebook post by the Conservatives states: “Residents in Bracknell expect their MP to represent the town with seriousness, professionalism and dignity in Parliament.

“The behaviour displayed by Mr Swallow fell far short of that standard and has rightly left many residents embarrassed and frustrated.”

Councillor Gareth Barnard, Leader of the Conservative Group on Bracknell Forest Council, said: “What we saw from Bracknell’s MP was disgraceful. Parliament is not a playground and the people of Bracknell deserve to be represented with professionalism and respect.

“When an MP behaves in a way that attracts ridicule rather than influence, it weakens their ability to stand up for the town they represent.

“Bracknell needs a serious voice in Westminster. Instead, we have seen behaviour that embarrasses the constituency and undermines the credibility any MP needs if they are to advocate effectively for local residents.”

The post continued: “Residents are entitled to ask whether this lack of seriousness is having real consequences for our town.

“Bracknell has not secured improvements to its local government settlement, and there remains uncertainty around the Conservative-approved special school that local families have been waiting for.

“At a time when Bracknell needs strong representation in Westminster, residents deserve an MP focused on delivering for the community, not embarrassing it.”
