Call for Action Against Pavement Parking Crisis

A neighbour has called for a crackdown on obstructive pavement parking off one of the busiest roads in Reading.

A local resident is urging action against obstructive pavement parking near one of Reading's busiest roads.

Basingstoke Road serves as a key route into town, with numerous homes and businesses lining its path, including six eateries, a pharmacy, and a supermarket.

Residents have voiced concerns about cars parking on the pavement at the junction of Basingstoke Road and Surrey Road, a one-way street.

Richard Wong raised the issue at a Reading Borough Council meeting, stating, "Local people are worried about illegal parking at this junction. It blocks drivers' views and poses safety risks, especially for disabled residents. Can the council share any recent enforcement actions here? Are there plans to ramp up enforcement?" He also shared a photo showing a blue car on the pavement.

In response, John Ennis, Labour councillor for Southcote, clarified that the vehicle in question was on private land, limiting enforcement options. However, he noted that Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) have been issued for cars parked on double yellow lines in the area. This year, four PCNs have been issued, with more last year for similar violations.

"Residents can report any vehicles parked incorrectly through our online tool, which aids our enforcement team," Ennis added during the traffic management sub-committee meeting on September 11.

Wong, a Labour Party member, is expected to run for the Katesgrove ward in the upcoming elections.
