Call for Action at Dangerous Shepherds Hill Junction

A neighbour is pushing for safety measures to be introduced at a crash-prone junction where a cyclist was recently hit and remains in a critical condition.

A local resident is calling for safety measures at a dangerous junction where a cyclist was recently injured and remains critically ill.

The Shepherds Hill Roundabout links the A4 London Road with Pitts Lane in Earley and Reading Road in Woodley, serving around 16 homes, a BP Fuel Station, an M&S Food Hall, a gym, a bakery, and The Shepherds House pub.

Concerns have escalated as over 70 accidents have been reported at Shepherds Hill.

On Saturday, August 29, a cyclist was seriously injured after being hit by a grey Hyundai i20 around 4.45pm. A 24-year-old man from Slough was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving.

Peter Wheat, a neighbour, shared images of police investigating the crash site and is urging Wokingham Borough Council to enhance road safety at the junction. He noted, "Since I've lived near Shepherds Hill Roundabout, there have been 77 accidents, including seven serious ones. Most recently, a cyclist was hit and is now in a life-threatening condition. What is the council doing to improve safety at this hotspot?"

Photos provided by Mr Wheat show a BMW crashed into a fence and a damaged Hyundai SUV that hit a lamppost.

He plans to raise this issue at the Wokingham Borough Council meeting on Thursday, September 25, where councillor Adrian Betteridge is expected to respond.

Additionally, a proposal to replace two homes in London Road with a drive-thru Starbucks was rejected, but the inspector found no harm regarding highways and parking for the project.
