Caversham Co-op Set for Major Upgrades

Changes are coming to a busy supermarket in Caversham: the Co-op on Henley Road will get new conditioning units for the fridges and other equipment as part of a planning approval.

It’s one of several recent decisions by Reading Borough Council affecting the area.

New plant equipment for Co-op in Caversham (PL/25/1663)

The Co-op won permission to add an extension and external air handling plant after redesigning a previously refused scheme. The council had rejected the earlier plan for its scale, appearance and lack of soft landscaping, but the revised design, which includes landscaping, was approved on 25 March. A planning agent said the works would help increase stock at the store.

Replacement Caversham home approved (PL/25/1100)

Owners of the Moorings in Upper Warren Avenue were given permission to replace the bungalow with a two-storey, more traditional-style house. A modern replacement had already been approved in April 2023, but the design changed and the revised plans were approved on 24 March. The new house will have four double bedrooms upstairs and generous living space with potential for an extra ground-floor bedroom.

Conversion of town-centre office to education use withdrawn (PL/25/1827)

A plan to convert The Anchorage, a five-storey office at the end of Bridge Street opposite The Oracle, for mixed office and education use was submitted in December but withdrawn on 26 March. The proposal would have made internal changes from the first floor upwards.

Office conversion into flats refused (PL/24/0866)

A proposal to turn the space above the former NatWest at 74 School Road in Tilehurst into two one-bedroom flats was refused on 26 March. The owner did not submit a developer agreement to fund affordable housing elsewhere in the borough, so the application was rejected.

You can view each decided application by typing the reference in brackets into the council's planning portal.
