Caversham Sinkhole Closure Extended to 11 Months

A road in Caversham will stay closed for months due to a sinkhole that was caused by a burst water pipe.

A road in Caversham will remain closed for several months due to a sinkhole caused by a burst water pipe.

The sinkhole on Kidmore Road appeared on Monday, January 13, leading to significant disruptions for drivers trying to access Tokers Green or Reading.

In the meantime, local traffic has been redirected through Shepherds Lane, Upper Woodcote Road, and other routes.

Thames Water initiated a 15-week pipe repair project in August, set to finish by October 27. However, complications with the groundwork have delayed the reopening.

According to the roadworks website One Network, the closure is now expected to last for a total of 11 months, with restrictions potentially lifted on Friday, December 12.

A spokesperson for Thames Water stated, "We apologise for any inconvenience this causes and will update all stakeholders as soon as we are able to. We discovered a secondary ground feature during the stabilisation works and are working closely with our contractors and local authorities to assess the situation and determine the next steps. Temporary access restrictions may be necessary to ensure the safety of the public and our teams on site."
