Concerns Grow Over Thatcham Land Auction Plans

A neighbour has raised concerns after a half-acre plot at Keighley Close in Thatcham was put up for auction by Barney Estates. The plot benefits from access from Keighley Close and sits near The Nature Discovery Centre.

They said: "The land was previously owned by a company called Henwick and has now been sold to an asset management company, which is selling it as plots.

"This has been attracting some unwanted attention from people further afield.

"Advertisers are hiding the fact it floods, and it is attracting people who want to develop on it, potentially to tarmac it and move in soon.

"The concern here is that they will ignore planning rules and set up camp."

Any development would require planning permission from West Berkshire Council.

They added: "The council is ignoring it, and residents of both Thatcham and Newbury are not aware of the impact.

"This is part of the green space that sits in the heart of Newbury and Thatcham, and the auctioneers and asset management company only care about profits!"

A spokesperson for Barney Estates said: "We are completely unaware of any unwanted attention regarding this land. The only interest in the land that has been received is from local people.

"No one from further afield.

"We advise all interested parties who are interested in planning to do their own research and raise their own enquiries."

The auction is due to take place on May 6, starting at a guide price of £15,000.
