England flags have been painted on roundabouts in West Berkshire, joining a wave of Union flags and St George's crosses appearing nationwide.
West Berkshire Council plans to remove the crosses from road markings due to safety concerns. Council leader Jeff Brooks stated, “We are watching this carefully and taking action where the flag would cause safety issues.” He also wished the England Women’s Rugby World Cup team every success.
Flags have been spotted on mini roundabouts at Greenham Road/Stroud Green, Market Street, and Craven Road/Bartholomew Street. A flag flying on the A339 bridge between the Burger King and Tesco roundabouts has since been removed.
However, the displays have sparked controversy, linked to an organised effort called “Operation Raise the Colours,” supported by far-right figures. In some places, the flag displays appear spontaneous, coinciding with a tense political climate regarding national identity in the UK.
Protests have occurred outside hotels housing asylum seekers, featuring union flags and St George's crosses prominently. An ongoing legal battle surrounds the closure of an asylum hotel in Essex, with more demonstrations expected that highlight themes of nationhood.
When asked about Sir Keir Starmer's stance on English flags, a spokesman confirmed, “Absolutely, patriotism, putting up English flags. We put up English flags all around Downing Street every time the English football team – women’s and men’s – are out trying to win games for us.”
