Controversial Housing Plans Spark 18 Objections

Eighteen objections have been lodged with West Berkshire Council over plans to put four houses on a former play area in Tilehurst.

Eighteen objections have been filed with West Berkshire Council against plans to build four houses on a former play area in Tilehurst.

The proposal includes making part of the site publicly accessible next to Linnet Close, though there are no confirmed plans for its management.

The developer is open to collaborating with the Parish Council or West Berkshire Council for this purpose.

This isn't the first time residential development has been proposed for the site, which used to be a play area for children. Previous applications were refused, with appeals dismissed, the last one in 2010 due to the site's remaining amenity value.

However, planners noted that since then, national and local planning policies have changed. It's now been 19 years since the site served as a play area, and the previous objections are no longer applicable, making the application acceptable.

Concerns have been raised regarding sewer capacity and potential traffic increases, but the highways authority has not objected to the expected traffic from the development.

Objections citing loss of sunlight and daylight for the new houses and gardens have also been noted, but the council's team disagrees with these claims.

Due to the number of objections, the plans will be reviewed at Thursday's Eastern Area Planning committee.
