Council Set to Decide Controversial Housing Plan

A verdict is due on a controversial plan to add 10 new homes to converted offices in Wokingham.

Wokingham is set to decide on a contentious plan to add 10 new homes at Ascot House, which was previously converted from offices into 21 flats.

Located near Finchampstead Road and opposite the Carnival Hub, the development company Klara Ascot Ltd wants to add three extra storeys, resulting in eight one-bedroom and two two-bedroom flats.

The Wokingham Borough Council's planning committee is scheduled to make a decision on Wednesday, November 12, but the proposal has already generated 16 objections from residents worried about the building becoming too bulky and overshadowing neighbouring properties.

Local councillors Rob Comber and Chris Cook have also raised issues, noting the absence of a lift, which would limit access for young families, the elderly, and disabled individuals.

Despite these objections, planning officer Benjamin Hindle has recommended approval, stating that conditions should be met, including a payment of £22,781 for affordable housing and £612 per flat to support the council’s travel initiatives.

The site has 38 parking spaces, including spots for electric vehicle charging. However, Cllr Comber highlighted concerns over the adequacy of these charging spaces should the project proceed, though Mr Hindle deemed the parking sufficient.

Hindle’s report noted the project’s positive aspects, asserting it represents a well-designed, sustainable development that makes effective use of underused land. He acknowledged that while there are concerns about overlooking and shadows cast on nearby homes, these issues don't outweigh the scheme’s benefits.

For more details, you can search for application reference 242066 on the council's planning portal. Ascot House has a complex planning history, including previous approvals for converting the building into flats and a larger plan that was withdrawn.
