Earley's Litter Pick Sparks Park Clean-Up Push

A push is underway to improve Earley's parks and public spaces after a large annual litter pick on Sunday 22 March.

More than two dozen people joined the town and parish councils and Wokingham Borough Council to collect bags of rubbish. The borough has also been doing walkabouts with its street‑cleaning contractor Biffa to identify problem spots.

Chalfont Park - near McDonald's, KFC and Domino's at The Square - was flagged as a hotspot at a full council meeting on 26 March, with calls for more signage to deter littering.

Councillor Caroline Smith (Liberal Democrats, Hillside) said: "So please, can we have a campaign including more signage to encourage people to dispose of their litter responsibly?"

Katrin Harding (Liberal Democrats, Thames), the council's executive member for the environment, backed the idea and promised further action.

"I am happy to ask the team to look into signage, but also, broadly, whether there is any further enforcement action that can be taken. This will of course move over to the anti-social behaviour team as well."

Cllr Vishal Srinivasan (Conservative, Shinfield) - who also took part in the pick - asked how the council can make sure litter isn't missed in "nooks and crannies" where it's harder to spot.

Cllr Harding replied: "Obviously, if there are areas of litter or fly tipping, please do report them and crews can go out for additional cleansing. To be honest, I think it is unrealistic that we would always be able to get into every nook and cranny, but I welcome reports to identify where these problems are."

All three councillors are up for election on Thursday 7 May.
