Fly-Tipping Scandal Hits West Reading Store

A huge pile of rubbish has been dumped outside a store and former pub in West Reading.

A huge pile of rubbish has been dumped outside a store and former pub in West Reading. A picture taken by photographer Paul King shows dozens of rubbish bags and other waste on the site along the A4 Bath Road.

The fly-tipping happened at the former Horncastle pub, which was converted into a Pets Corner store 10 years ago. The rubbish was left in the store’s car park.

Responsibility for the clear-up lies with Reading Borough Council; the Pets Corner is near the borough boundary with Calcot in West Berkshire.

People caught fly-tipping can be issued a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of £1,000. The £1,000 FPN was introduced last year as part of a crackdown by the council alongside its enforcement partner Kingdom.

The Kingdom team began enforcement in the town in September last year. While £1,000 is the standard FPN, courts can impose larger fines (up to an unlimited amount) and ignoring an FPN can lead to prosecution.

Reading Borough Council has been asked whether the waste has been removed, and what action will be taken to punish or prosecute those responsible.
