Local By-Elections: Conservatives Dominate in Shinfield

Three by-elections for the local councils in Earley and Shinfield have been decided.

Three local by-elections in Earley and Shinfield were decided on Thursday 11 December, electing four new councillors.

Hawkedon (Earley Town Council): Liberal Democrat Keith Yabsley won the by-election with 298 votes and was elected. Other results: Gregory Jackson (Reform UK) 167, Madhu Ranga (Conservative) 257, Stuart Simpson (Green) 83, Jacky Steele (Labour) 32. There were 838 ballots cast. Earley Town Council now has 18 Liberal Democrats, five Conservatives and three Labour members.

Shinfield North (Shinfield Parish Council, two seats): Conservatives Jackie Rance (148) and Greg Poole (147) were elected. The runner-up was Parry Batth (Reform UK) with 116; Batth was previously a member of the Conservative Party and a borough councillor from 2019 to 2023. Other results: Alex Nezhuvingal (Liberal Democrats) 77, Dominic Rider (Liberal Democrats) 107, Robin Snell (Labour) 97. There were 407 ballots.

Grazeley (Shinfield Parish Council): Conservative Anthony Pollock was elected with 166 votes; Chris Johnson (Liberal Democrats) received 151. There were 321 ballots.

Councillor Jackie Rance, having been elected to Wokingham Borough Council for Shinfield in a by-election last December, will now sit on both councils. Shinfield Parish Council is apolitical.
