Local Residents Demand Action on Tent Encampment

A neighbour has made complaints about drinking, drug use and anti-social behaviour coming from tents in Reading, while accusing the council of ‘inaction’.

A neighbour has raised concerns about drinking, drug use, and anti-social behaviour linked to a tent encampment in Reading, accusing the council of ‘inaction’.

The tents are set up on a patch of grass on Great Knollys Street, close to the town centre, opposite the Reading Buses depot and the New Beginnings charity.

According to the neighbour, who wishes to remain anonymous, the situation has worsened despite several complaints to the council. He stated: “The number of tents continues to grow, and there are ongoing issues with antisocial behaviour, alcohol and drug use, and littering. The area has become unsafe and unsightly.”

He believes local authorities should be held accountable, emphasising that it poses a safety risk for the community.

A council spokesperson confirmed they are aware of the encampment, which currently houses four individuals. They are working on a permanent solution to prevent future encroachments and have acknowledged the anti-social behaviour linked to the tents.

They added that the council must follow legal procedures before eviction, and they are waiting for a court date to seek possession of the land. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to report any issues to the police or the council, and to use the Love Clean Streets app for litter complaints.

Additionally, the council is ensuring that those in the encampment have access to support services like St Mungo’s homeless outreach.
