Monk’s Retreat Transforms into Irish Bar

A town centre pub in Reading has come under new ownership and has turned into an Irish-themed bar.

A Reading pub has transformed into an Irish-themed bar under new ownership. The Monk's Retreat, located at the busy intersection of Friar Street and Market Place, has been a beloved local spot for years.

Initially a Wetherspoons, it became a Stonegate pub in 2017 after a renovation and the sale of its famous ‘hanging monk’ figure to support a children’s hospice.

Recently, the pub switched from Stonegate management to a leased model with Dunning’s, an independent company. Manager Philipp Goerlach commented, “It’s a bit of both; we’re still part of Stonegate, but the pub is leased to Dunning’s.”

Major changes rolled out in September include a refreshed menu and decor, plus a bottom bar that’s set to open soon as a cocktail venue. Goerlach emphasised, “Dunning’s gives us more freedom with drinks, and my priority is ensuring everyone has a good time.”

The revamped menu features burgers, steaks, and classic dishes, with the venue licensed to stay open until 1am on weekends and 11pm on weekdays.

Nearby Irish-themed options include McCafferty’s and O’Neill’s, indicating a trend in the area.

This news comes as parent company Stonegate deals with significant debt and plans to sell over 1,000 of its pubs across the UK.
