Plans for New 3G Pitch Unveiled at Faraday Road

The report on a feasibility study and outline business case regarding putting a 3G pitch to replace the grass pitch at Faraday Road is out.

The feasibility study for replacing the grass pitch at Faraday Road with a 3G pitch has been released, revealing a cost of approximately £1,250,000.

Annual net income from the pitch is estimated to be around £70,000, addressing the significant demand for 3G pitches, especially in Newbury.

This proposal is a priority for the current administration and was a key commitment in the Liberal Democrat manifesto, aiming to enhance sports opportunities for local residents.

In November 2023, football made its return to Faraday Road, where the grass pitch has been heavily used over the past 18 months. However, the council notes that grass pitches are limited by weather conditions.

The updated Playing Pitch Strategy highlights the need for more football availability in Newbury, suggesting the conversion of the existing grass pitch to a 3G surface.

In late 2024, consultants Sports Labs were commissioned to assess the feasibility of this plan, concluding that the transition to a 3G pitch would be relatively straightforward, though some reinforcement of the subgrade is necessary due to a peat layer.

Any pitch development will require planning approval and will be discussed at the West Berkshire Council's executive committee on September 25.
