Three confirmed cases of Meningitis B have been reported in Reading. A Henley College student, teenager Lewis Waters, has died and two other young people are receiving treatment.
Labour MP Matt Rodda said: "Residents in Reading and the surrounding area will be aware of three confirmed cases of Meningitis B."
He added: "Tragically, one student has died and I would like to offer my deepest condolences to their family and friends at this very difficult time."
The risk to the wider community is described as low because meningitis is only spread after a long period of close contact, but officials are urging vigilance.
Meningitis symptoms can include vomiting, a rash, dizziness and aches and pains. Mr Rodda warned: "Meningitis can progress rapidly, so if you or someone in your family is showing any of these symptoms, seek urgent medical help."
The UK Health Security Agency is leading the response, identifying close contacts and offering preventative antibiotics. Information has been shared with affected schools and families.
Olivia Bailey, the Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, confirmed there is a case in her constituency - a pupil at Westwood Farm Junior School in Tilehurst, and said: "My thoughts are with the young person and their family."
Labour MP Yuan Yang said: "I am aware of the localised meningitis outbreak in Reading, and my thoughts and condolences are with the young person who has tragically passed away." He added: "As always, if you need medical treatment, you can call 111, visit your GP, or call 999 for urgent and serious issues."
