The Railway Tavern Reopens with New Look!

The name of a pub in Reading town centre will change as part of a £200,000 upgrade project.

The name of a pub in Reading town centre is set to change as part of a £200,000 upgrade. The Gateway on Greyfriars Road is currently closed for refurbishment, led by new licensees Dave Kesterton and Jason Walters from Stormy Pub Company and Heineken-owned Star Pubs.

Once it reopens later this month, it will be called The Railway Tavern and create 12 new jobs as part of the investment.

Kesterton emphasised, “There are lots of bars in Reading but no traditional pubs. With the new town centre development and the station nearby, we're keen to offer something different.” The Railway Tavern will boast great coffee during the day and live entertainment at night.

He added, “Nine years ago, I came to Reading to run The Victoria for just four weeks. Now, Reading's vibrant social scene makes it perfect for our newest venture.” The pub will have a classic London city pub vibe, featuring a bar, lounge, and entertainment zones.

The bar is being resized to enhance capacity for activities like dancing, live music on Saturdays, karaoke on Sundays, and a weekly quiz night. Expect a fresh, modern yet cosy décor along with upgraded toilets.

Reopening on Friday, November 28, the pub will also get a facelift with a midnight blue and buff colouring, complemented by new signage, lighting, and hanging baskets for a polished appearance.

Andrew Downie from Star Pubs added, “Dave and Jason’s experience with various pubs in the area uniquely positions them to revamp The Railway Tavern. We’re excited to co-invest in giving it a new lease of life.”
