A consultation has been launched into expanding SEND provision at two schools in Tilehurst.
Tilehurst is set to expand its Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) provision at Westwood Farm infant and junior schools. A consultation has been launched for a potential new extension at the schools, aimed at accommodating the significant rise in children with education health care plans (EHCPs) in West Berkshire, which has surged by 57% from 2020 to 2025.
The plan includes increasing the current 12-place Key Stage 1 unit to 18 places, now also covering Key Stage 2 pupils, ensuring continuity for children up to Year 6. This expansion aims to create a familiar learning environment, significantly reducing disruption for families.
Westwood Farm's infant school serves over 200 children aged 3-7, while the junior school caters for children aged 7-11. Currently, there’s no provision for those with complex needs in this age group.
The new resource unit will feature more specialist classrooms and therapy spaces, enabling focused one-to-one teaching and small group learning.
Although not the highest priority for EHCP numbers, the council claims this expansion is a strategic local solution. Unlike other sites requiring hefty investments, Westwood Farm is a low-cost option that will efficiently meet local needs.
To gather community input, the council has launched an online survey and is hosting drop-in sessions at Westwood Farm School on December 2 and 4. Families are encouraged to participate and share their thoughts.
