West Berkshire Fights Off Reading's Land Grab

West Berkshire Council is leading a charm offensive – to tell people in the east of the district why it is better to stay with them than to join up with Reading.

West Berkshire Council is on a mission to convince residents in the east of the district why they should remain part of West Berkshire instead of merging with Reading.

Reading Borough Council has kicked off a land grab campaign, proposing that eastern parishes like Calcot, Tilehurst, Theale, Purley, and Pangbourne join a Greater Reading authority.

In response, West Berkshire is considering forming a new Ridgeway Council with South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse.

West Berkshire Council leader Jeff Brooks strongly opposes Reading's proposal, stating, “We refute this unhelpful and unsolicited land grab from Reading. Our eastern communities have long been part of West Berkshire.”

Councillors are engaging with local town and parish councils to discuss Reading's proposal and gather feedback from residents.

Justin Pemberton, a councillor involved in the outreach, emphasises the importance of listening to residents, stating, “These towns and villages are vital parts of West Berkshire, and their voices matter.”

If the Ridgeway Council is formed, Reading aims to expand its boundaries to include the aforementioned areas, claiming they rely on Reading for services.

“We believe these areas are best served by West Berkshire, and many residents agree,” Pemberton added.

Reading Borough Council is currently conducting a survey to collect opinions on this proposal. They will attend upcoming town and parish meetings to discuss the issue:

  • Pangbourne – 7.30pm on September 9
  • Theale – 7.30pm on September 15
  • Purley – 7.30pm on September 29
  • Tidmarsh with Sulham – 7.30pm on October 2

The council is also coordinating with Tilehurst and Holybrook for future meetings.
