West Berkshire Youth Survey Highlights Mental Health Issues

The results of the latest West Berkshire Youth Survey are out.

The West Berkshire Youth Survey results are in, revealing insights from 50% of the district's secondary school pupils.

Mental health was a major concern, with over half of respondents highlighting it as a key issue, second only to academic pressure. Many young people expressed a desire for more information on mental health and wellbeing.

While most reported feeling safe and happy in their local area, the survey noted that mobile phones and constant connectivity increased pressure on young people. High expectations in secondary schools often led to anxiety.

The West Berkshire Council’s task group pointed out the growing trend of young people disliking school and feeling pressure related to education and friendships. They stressed the importance of not medicalising young people's difficulties while acknowledging the progress made in destigmatising mental health.

The survey also identified financial barriers to youth activities, with 48% rating local opportunities as fair or poor, especially among older teens. Access to adult facilities can be limited for young people, calling for the need for community spaces like the Youth Café at the Waterside Centre in Newbury.

Discussions highlighted that fewer universal services could contribute to mental health challenges among youth, impacting those in deprived areas the most. However, 80% of respondents stated they would talk to a parent or carer if they were worried, emphasising the value of supportive networks.
