The new arrangements for parking in Wokingham have been given the go-ahead, as the rules will be policed by a team of enforcers.
The new parking rules in Wokingham have been approved, now to be enforced by a dedicated team.
In Wokingham, Woodley, Earley, and nearby villages, residents need permits to park on the streets. Anyone without a permit can face fines.
There are currently 16 controlled parking zones in Wokingham Borough, with resident permits priced at £40 a year. This will increase by £15 to £55 for one car and by £65 to £105 for a second car.
The changes were discussed at a meeting of Wokingham Borough Council's executive committee. Imogen Shepherd-DuBey (Liberal Democrats, Emmbrook) supported the policy, stating, "We can’t create more parking spaces in Wokingham town centre, so we must optimise what we have. I believe these changes will improve parking availability for residents who need it and ensure fair and consistent rules."
The council is also looking for a new enforcement company, as the contract with Marston Holdings will end in 2026. Adrian Betteridge (Liberal Democrats, Barkham & Arborfield) noted that outsourcing has been cost-effective, and the council will begin procuring a new contractor.
Additionally, a visitor permit scheme is being introduced, allowing residents to permit guests without fines. Costs will be £12 for three-hour permits, £26 for six hours, £30 for 12 hours, and £50 for 24 hours.
The executive committee unanimously agreed to search for a new enforcement contractor and implement the updated residential parking permit rules on November 20.
