Bracknell Council's High Earners Reveal Pay Gap

The pay packets of Bracknell Forest Borough Council's richest staff have been revealed - some earn four or five times a typical wage.

The council has 214 staff on £50,000 or more, including 154 on £55,000 or more, and some approaching £200,000.

That sits against national figures where the minimum wage is about £24,800 a year before tax, median pay is £32,890 and full-time workers earn about £39,040 a year.

At the top, chief executive Susan Halliwell is on a salary band of over £200,000, with Executive Director: People Grainne Siggins paid over £180,000.

Three other executive directors - Resources boss Stuart McKellar, Place lead Andrew Hunter and Communities chief Kevin Gibbs - earn at least £150,000, and a large group of assistant directors and statutory officers are on six-figure packages.

Director of Public Health Charlotte Pavitt is paid over £125,000, while senior legal and social care roles, including Borough Solicitor and Monitoring Officer Sanjay Prashar and assistant directors for children's and adults' social care, earn over £120,000.

Assistant Director: Property Services Sarah Varley gets over £115,000 and Assistant Director: Commissioning Sally Parkinson over £110,000. Key operational posts in highways, planning and digital services are over £100,000, with a further layer of senior managers on more than £90,000.

Overall, the data shows a tightly controlled hierarchy where hundreds of officers earn well above local and national norms, and the very top earners are in a completely different league to elected representatives and the Bracknell residents who fund their pay. Elected members, by taking on a lot of responsibility, can hope to top up their salaries by £30,000.
