It was calm at an asylum seeker hotel in Reading the day after a police response to a reported incident at the former Ibis on Oxford Road on Wednesday evening.
A photo shows a man in handcuffs, officers and a group of men outside the hotel, which is being used to house people seeking asylum. The Local Democracy Reporting Service saw little sign of damage or disruption when it visited around 1pm on Thursday.
A security guard wouldnt say what happened. Shortly after, a man in a suit was heard telling security staff to turn their bodycams on. Most residents approached were unwilling to speak.
There was an unconfirmed rumour the trouble began over a complaint about the food. A man from Afghanistan who arrived three months ago said the food was "ok", but knew others had complained. Management declined to comment.
There have been tensions at asylum hotels since the summer of disorder in 2024, with protests and content creators known as auditors visiting sites. Auditors DJE Media and Truth Hurts 101 UK have been to Reading, and Truth Hurts 101 UK visited this hotel in May last year.
A Stop the Boats sticker was spotted on concrete signage showing the minimum room price. Neighbours and nearby businesses said the evening was largely quiet and the incident did not disrupt local trade.
Statements have been requested from Thames Valley Police and the Home Office.
