Customers and pedestrians have been told to expect disruptions as Earley train station's footbridge to Platform 2 is refurbished.
The bridge will close from mid-October to April 2027 to allow the work to go ahead.
Wokingham Borough Council has appointed a contractor and, with Earley Town Council, provided a diversion via Station Road, Wokingham Road, Henley Wood Road, Henley Wood Subway, Dartington Avenue and Nightingale Road.
The Earley Station car park will be closed for use as a site compound; drivers are being encouraged to use the Winnersh Park & Ride car park and train station instead.
Platform 2 for trains to London Waterloo will be inaccessible from the main station entrance during the closure.
Wokingham Borough Council said it recognised the inconvenience but that the work is needed to improve the footbridge's safety, reliability and lifespan.
Councillor Alistair Neal (Liberal Democrats, St Nicolas) welcomed the project but noted the new design has no 'bike gutter' for getting bikes up and down the stairs.
Network Rail won prior planning consent from the borough council in March this year.
