Late-Night Licence Bid for Pepe's Piri Piri

Pepe's Piri Piri, a chicken takeaway on the corner of Oxford Road and Zinzan Street near Reading town centre, has applied to sell hot food later into the night.

Open since October 2019, the branch serves 100 per cent halal wings, chicken portions, lamb and beef burgers and vegetarian paneer options.

The franchisees have clashed with Reading Borough Council over cooking odours and planning compliance after neighbours complained about smells from the extractor system.

Rupert Buckingham, a resident of Zinzan Street, said fumes that smell of 'burning animal fat' had wafted into his living room and bedroom and created "a horrible environment to live in".

At one point, a man said his pregnant wife was "throwing up constantly into a bucket" because of the fumes.

The council issued an enforcement notice over unauthorised changes made when the shop was converted from a Ladbrokes into a takeaway. The business temporarily closed in April 2022 to fix the extraction system and reopened later that year.

Planning approval for the extraction details and a changed shopfront was finally granted in January 2024.

A planning agent for Pepe's stated: "The restaurant provides a family-friendly dining experience with family seating areas and healthy grilled food, as part of the new healthy style of living, something which was limited in the area and is very successful.

"The changes fit within the existing building fabric, improved the aesthetical appearance of the building, and attracts customers while at the same time offers a modern interior and exterior appearance that sits comfortably within its context.

"The changes to the existing building are very successful in this vicinity, which only adds as a positive project to help bring up the surrounding area."

Pepe's is currently open 11am-11pm daily. The operators have applied for a late-night refreshment licence to sell hot food and soft drinks until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays and 1am Sunday to Thursday.

A statutory consultation is live. You can comment by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk. The deadline for representations is Wednesday, June 3.
