Wokingham Faces Rising Homelessness Challenge

The impact of homelessness in Wokingham Borough has been discussed as the number of households in emergency accommodation has been revealed.

The issue of homelessness in Wokingham Borough has come to light as the number of households in emergency accommodation is revealed.

Councils are required to provide housing for eligible homeless individuals who have priority needs and are not intentionally homeless.

Emergency accommodation, typically found in hotels and B&Bs, serves as a temporary solution while suitable housing is sought.

This topic was discussed during a council meeting on October 21, where Councillor Shahid Younis requested the latest figures.

While specific numbers of homeless individuals were not disclosed, it was noted that 156 households were either homeless or at risk during the first quarter of 2025/26, from April to June.

The housing team successfully prevented homelessness for 46 households and relieved it for 47, leaving eight households in emergency nightly B&B accommodation.

Council leader Stephen Conway highlighted that these numbers fluctuate constantly, stating, “Emergency accommodation is the most expensive and unsatisfactory option for both the individuals and the council.”

He emphasised the challenge of high housing costs in the area and the need to improve the quantity and quality of affordable housing.

According to government data from July to September 2024, Wokingham Borough had 15 households in emergency accommodation, the second lowest in the county, with only Bracknell Forest reporting fewer at 10.

Graham Ebers, deputy chief executive of the council, noted the financial pressures faced by other areas, particularly in London and parts of Berkshire, but reassured that Wokingham is managing well despite the high-risk nature of homelessness due to population pressures and the demand for temporary accommodation.
