Woman Faces Eviction After Mother's Death

A woman with complex needs faces being forced out of her family home in Garston Close, Southcote, after her mum died last year. Siereece, who has multiple disabilities, lives in a Reading Borough Council property that she cannot automatically inherit.

Her mum, Claire Wall-Weeks, fought the council for the house 26 years ago. Brianna Wall-Weeks, one of three daughters, says history is repeating.

Brianna said: "She is extremely vulnerable. She has Type 1 diabetes, cerebral palsy, an eating disorder, and severe mental health difficulties. I live directly across the road and I am her main carer. We rely on each other daily."

The council sent a Notice of Seeking Possession on 25 March, saying the three-bedroom home is larger than the tenant's assessed one-bedroom need and could be reallocated to families in urgent need.

Reading Borough Council says it is mindful of Ms Wall-Weeks' needs but must make best use of limited housing. It says a tenancy can normally pass to one qualifying family member, but where a successor's assessed need is much smaller than the property the council may seek possession. The council adds it must offer suitable alternative accommodation, has delayed action to give the family time to explore options, and that support remains available.
