The Southcote Beefeater on the A4 Bath Road in Reading has been put up for sale on Rightmove, and owner Whitbread has confirmed it is seeking to sell. The listing says the site could be repurposed subject to planning permission.
Locals flooded social media with memories and concern for staff. Alan Porton said: "I feel for the staff, many have been working there for decades and are held in high esteem by the customers." Jeanette Absolom added: "Oh, that’s sad, I used it many times and know some of the staff who are always lovely."
There are worries about flats and fast-food replacing community spots. Christine Mylum said: "Nothing else will be left in the area for people to eat and socialise. The George & Dragon is gone, replaced with another Greggs." The George & Dragon on Bath Road was demolished in August 2024 and replaced with a Greggs drive-thru the following March.
Some readers suggested chains might step in. Dennis Allen wrote: "With a bit of luck, Wetherspoons might buy it." Readers noted Wetherspoons outlets in Reading have declined over recent years, with the Monks Retreat sold in 2016 and the former Baron Cadogan sold in March 2019.
There are also unconfirmed rumours Miller & Carter could be interested. Whitbread has been pursuing an Accelerating Growth Plan since April 2024, converting some branded restaurants into hotel rooms and dining spaces; the Beefeater at Reading Gateway closed in July 2024. The Rightmove listing is marked "price on application".
