Bracknell Councillors To Launch New Scrutiny Investigations

Bracknell councillors will tonight pick two short scrutiny probes to investigate local services as the current council term winds down.

The Overview and Scrutiny panel wants residents to help choose the topics. They propose two focused one-month reviews, tightly scoped and evidence-led.

  • Opportunities for physical activity in Bracknell.
  • Community spaces - bringing people together or standing empty.
  • Bracknell town centre's performance for shoppers, workers and visitors.
  • Local parade shops and neighbourhood centres - are they still thriving?
  • Protection and improvement of parks and green spaces.

These tests matter: whether children have safe places to play, whether the high street feels alive, and whether there is somewhere nearby to meet, exercise or get some air.

The move follows a hard-hitting Thames Water review that exposed sewage-choked rivers. Councillors grilled Thames Water representatives in public and drew up firm recommendations for cleaner water, stronger monitoring and better information for residents.

They say cross-party scrutiny, asking straight questions and refusing to accept vague promises, made the review effective.

The programme is locked in through early 2028 so ongoing reviews won't be dropped after the next elections. The panel says it wants to stay sharp, practical and resident-driven: pick a few local questions, dig in and aim to change things on the ground.
