Calcot Roadworks Cause Confusion for Drivers

Roadworks at Mill Lane have closed the entrance to the Fords Farm estate in Calcot, leaving drivers confused by diversions and some making banned entrances into the estate.

Mark Buckley said: "There is no clear diversion showing how to get into the estate, it is only open the other side for people to come out.

"I called Newbury [West Berkshire Council] about it. A young woman who picked up the phone said: ' Is that the address for the farm?'

"It just goes to show how little Newbury care about Fords Farm and Calcot.

"They're in their own bit of paradise."

West Berkshire Council has increased signage and says drivers can use a diversion via the A4 Bath Road, Charrington Road, Pollards Way, The Chase and open stretches of Mill Lane.

"Thames Valley Police were notified of the moving traffic offences earlier this week (July 27-31) where motorists were turning into Mill Lane from the A4 Bath Road," a council spokesperson said.

"Signage at the site was also increased to provide additional clarity for road users, and it is the team's understanding that the situation has improved as the week has progressed. The site has been, and will continue to be, inspected daily by our Streetworks team. Officers are working closely with the contractor undertaking the works to ensure that any necessary adjustments are identified and implemented in a timely manner."

Mr Buckley said the situation had improved in a follow-up call.

Mill Lane and the entrance to Fords Farm will be closed until 11.59pm on Friday 21 August.

An SGN spokesperson said: "We're working in the area to upgrade our old metal gas mains to new plastic pipes. For everyone's safety around our work area in Mill Lane, we've temporarily closed the road until Friday 21 August. A signed diversion route is in place for road users. We're sorry for any inconvenience our work may cause and thank the local community for their patience."
