Long-Serving Bracknell Councillor to Retire

Long-serving Bracknell councillor Roy Bailey, who spent about 30 years with Thames Valley Police, has told The Local Democracy Reporting Service he will not seek re-election in May 2027.

The Labour councillor, who represents Bracknell town centre and parks, was first elected to Bracknell Forest Council in 1997 and also serves as a town councillor.

His local career included a spell as cabinet member for children and young people from 2023 to 2026. He has represented the ward alongside Labour councillor Megan Wright.

Before politics, Bailey worked in CID, the drugs squad, community and race relations and senior command, finishing his policing career as head of training.

He later moved into teaching and business consultancy, holds a doctorate in criminal justice, has been a school governor for more than 30 years and has contributed to academic work on policing.

Now retired, he is writing his memoirs. His daughter, Olivia Bailey, is the Labour MP for Reading West. His decision to step down follows the death of his wife Jeanne in May, aged 77.

Bailey will remain a Bracknell Forest councillor until the borough elections next spring.
