Work has started on a new playground at Shaw House. Construction will last just under two weeks and, funded through the Community Infrastructure Levy, the play area is due to open later this summer.
At its centre is a 'Great Hall' play structure inspired by Shaw House's 1581 architecture, designed to spark imaginative play and connect children with the site's history.
Located on the old netball court from when Shaw House was a school, the playground will mix traditional kit with inclusive features such as sensory panels, a nest swing, an accessible carousel and balance trails.
The space is being finished with natural materials and low‑maintenance surfaces, plus accessible paths and safety surfacing to make it welcoming for all.
Nigel Foot (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), executive member for culture, leisure, sport and countryside said: "This is a really exciting addition to Shaw House and a great boost for local families.
"It's fantastic to be creating a space where children can play, explore and engage with the history of the house in a fun and imaginative way."
On-site catering will be boosted by Gladys, the trailer serving freshly prepared panninis, and an opening celebration is planned for the summer.
The project is part of a wider programme of improvements at Shaw House, including newly dressed rooms and the creation of Tudor and Edwardian gardens to bring its history to life for visitors.
