Reading MPs have welcomed "breathing space" in the budget for families and businesses.
Olivia Bailey, Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, hailed measures including a zero per cent VAT rate on electricity extended until 30 June 2027 and the abolition of gas standing charges. Motorists will get a 5p fuel duty cut extended and fuel duty rates frozen until 1 July 2027.
Businesses will benefit from a A3 1 billion business-rates package, meaning more than half of retail, hospitality and leisure firms in the South East will pay no business rates. The governmentB9s business rates freeze is expected to benefit around 588 properties in Reading and around 542 properties in West Berkshire.
The budget was announced in Parliament on Wednesday, October 28.
Mrs Bailey said: "This Budget gives families in Reading West and Mid Berkshire the breathing space they need today, while making the long-term choices that will build a stronger future."
Mrs Bailey said: "I am particularly pleased to see support for our pubs and small brewers, which play such an important role in our local communities. I have been asking the government to implement a Guest Beer provision to support our wonderful local breweries and I am delighted the Chancellor has listened."
John Healey, the Chancellor, said: "This is a Budget for breathing space and fresh hope for the future in Reading and across the country."
Yuan Yang, the Labour MP for Earley and Woodley, said: "Households in council tax bands A to D are going to get a A3 100 rebate directly into our bank accounts in January, which will really help with the winter pinch when it comes to our energy bills."
Yuan Yang added: "The government asked Ofgem to take standing charges off gas bills."
MPs say the measures should give households and local businesses some breathing space this winter.
