Sainsbury's Seeks 24/7 Alcohol Sales in Reading

Sainsbury's in Broad Street, Reading, has applied to sell alcohol 24/7 - meaning the busy town-centre store could be selling alcohol and other items round the clock.

Slightly smaller than the Friar Street branch, the store has a bakery, a Costa Express and meal-deal options like sandwiches, salads and sushi. Sainsbury's also provides a 'Chop Chop' delivery service where customers can buy up to 30 items and receive them within 60 minutes.

The licensing application to Reading Borough Council is for 24/7 alcohol sales and, it is understood, would allow later deliveries via its online service and apps such as Deliveroo, Just Eat and Uber Eats.

The Broad Street Superstore is currently open from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 12pm to 6pm on Sundays.

A statutory consultation is live. You can respond by emailing licensing@reading.gov.uk. The deadline for responses closes on Wednesday, November 4.

Sainsbury's has three stores in the town centre: Broad Street, Friar Street and Sainsbury's Local in Station Road, which opened in January last year. A previous Sainsbury's Local on Shinfield Road closed in May 2023 and became the Honey & Ghee Asian supermarket.
