Shaw House Unveils Revamped Edwardian Garden

Shaw House's historic Edwardian Rose Garden has been completed. Using Country Life photos from 1910, the team has recreated key features, planted new beds and carried out specialist conservation to reshape yew trees believed to be those in the pictures. The improvements were funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. A sundial will be added in the coming months and roses will be planted in the autumn.

The work forms part of a wider programme at Shaw House, including a new Tudor Garden and room restorations. Further plans include developing the community garden area and opening a children's playground.

"Shaw House is one of West Berkshire's most important heritage sites, and this project is helping bring another part of its history back to life," said Nigel Foot (Lib Dem, Newbury Clay Hill), who heads the culture and leisure portfolio.

"The work completed so far has transformed the space and visitors can already see the character of the Edwardian Garden emerging.

"Once the roses are planted later this year, the garden will provide another attractive feature for residents and visitors to enjoy alongside the Tudor Garden and the wider Shaw House grounds."
