An application to add an extra storey to Beverley Court, Cedar Drive, Sunningdale has prompted a strong objection from the area MP, who is urging the Royal Borough's planning committee to refuse the plans.
The site sparked controversy in 2020 when Cyntra Properties won prior approval to add a fourth storey and create nine flats. Residents blasted that scheme as a "money‑making exercise", warning it would dominate the cul-de-sac, introduce overlooking and replace pitched roofs with flat ones.
A covenant limiting the estate to 27 flats was varied amid parking worries. The new application from Consortiums Development Ltd seeks prior approval for four extra flats; the applicant says the homes would meet national space standards.
In an objection dated Tuesday, May 5, Conservative MP Jack Rankin described the proposal as "effectively a resubmission" and said the developer had failed to address "substantive planning concerns". He argued the council "must push back" against what he called an inappropriate use of permitted development rights.
Rankin warned the extra storey would make Beverley Court "materially taller and bulkier", creating a "visually dominant, incongruous building" at odds with Cedar Drive and planning guidance. He also raised the risk of "increased overlooking, loss of privacy" and disruption during construction, and questioned whether the level of work could be "major engineering" needing full permission.
The MP flagged parking and transport pressures, noting residents "remain reliant on cars for everyday journeys", plus unresolved issues such as rooftop plant and limited consultation. He concluded the proposal is harmful, conflicts with policy and "should be refused prior approval", asking to be kept informed of the outcome.
