Thatcham Residents Rally Against Hydrotherapy Centre Plans

Plans for a hydrotherapy centre on open land in Dunston Park, Thatcham, have sparked local anger. The site was gifted to the West Berkshire Therapy Centre, but around 40 objections have been lodged fearing loss of green space.

Objectors say the area is vital for kidsfootball, play and community events, and warn Floral Way cannot cope with more traffic and parking. They also point out the site is not on a bus route, which could be a problem for users with mobility needs. Some suggest using derelict Colthrop buildings instead of taking more green land.

The proposed single-storey facility would provide hydrotherapy for people with mobility impairments, those needing rehabilitation and people with chronic conditions. Plans include car and cycle parking, EV charging and soft landscaping. The site was gifted to the West Berkshire Therapy Centre, a charity set up by the West Berkshire Neurological Alliance, which wants a hydrotherapy pool to complement its specialist gym with power-assisted equipment.

Because of the objections, the application is likely to go before the council planning committee.
