West Berkshire Council Faces Reputation Risks

West Berkshire Council has added its own reputation to the corporate risk register, alongside its dire financial position.

The governance committee will note the move next Tuesday (April 28) as it reviews the council's operations.

Details on 17 top risks have been redacted from public view, with the council saying there may be sensitive legal, financial or personal information involved.

The report proposes a new audit and risk committee to provide a stronger, clearer focus on financial management and risk assurance.

Items marked red, including reputation, mean immediate action is required because the system of governance, risk management and control is inadequate.

Reputational risk is the potential for negative public perception, media backlash or loss of trust, often following scandals, poor customer service or data breaches.

Financial risk is the chance a council can't meet obligations or maintain services, driven by demand pressures, inflation and reduced central funding.

At the end of the last quarter there were 17 risks on the Corporate Risk Map, with 10 above the council's acceptable limit.
