West Berkshire Council is supporting the national campaign 'Odds Are: They Win' to raise awareness of gambling harm as the World Cup grips the nation.
With major tournaments driving a surge in gambling advertising, the council warns about highly targeted marketing and products designed to keep people spending. During major sporting events, more than half of televised gambling adverts promote free bets or incentives, and six in 10 people in the UK see gambling ads at least once a week.
The campaign aims to reduce stigma with a simple message - 'it is not your fault, you are not alone, and help is available'.
"Major sporting events should be enjoyed, but we know they can also increase pressure to gamble," said Patrick Clark (Lib Dem, Newbury Wash Common), executive portfolio holder for adult social care and public health.
"This campaign helps people understand the risks and reminds residents that support is available locally.
"Gambling harm can affect anyone, and it is important people know they are not alone and that help is there when they need it."
In West Berkshire, support is available through GamCare, debt and budgeting advice, mental health services, and Citizens Advice. Residents and organisations can find out more and access resources via the Odds Are: They Win supporter pack online.
