Labour Retains Reading Council Amid Shifts

Labour has held onto control of Reading Borough Council in the 2026 elections.

The vote saw three lead councillors for the Labour Party lose their seats to the Green Party, while the Conservatives regained a seat in Emmer Green from Reform UK and a seat in Caversham Heights after a Labour councillor vacated it.

The council now has 29 Labour councillors, 11 Greens, five Conservatives and three Liberal Democrats.

Notable results included Greens winning Abbey, Coley, Katesgrove, Park, Redlands and Thames, while Conservatives took Emmer Green and Caversham Heights. Lib Dems held Tilehurst and Labour kept several key wards including Whitley and Norcot.

Some named winners: Jacqueline Dominguez (Green) in Abbey; Richard Walkem (Green) in Coley; Louise Keane (Green) in Katesgrove; Rob White (Green) in Park; Kathryn McCann (Green) in Redlands; David Clarke (Green) in Thames; Alex Smith (Conservative) in Emmer Green; Isobel Ballsdon and Saadia Saadat (Conservative) in Caversham Heights; Meri O'Connell (Lib Dem) in Tilehurst; Rachel Eden (Lab) in Whitley.

The last result for Coley came in at around 4.20am on Friday, May 8.
