Olivia Bailey, the Labour MP for Reading West and Mid Berkshire, has been elected chair of the Women and Equalities Committee, a role that will scrutinise the government on equality and women's rights. She was voted in on Monday, September 14.
"I'm honoured to have been elected. I'll use this role to hold the government to account, ensure Labour delivers on its commitments on equality, and lead the important conversations we need to have in Parliament.
"At a time when equality issues are more important, and often more contested, than ever, I want the Committee to bring people together, work constructively across party lines and make sure the voices of those too often overlooked are heard.
"I'm proud to take on this role, and I'll carry the voices and experiences of people across Reading West and Mid Berkshire with me."
She was elected after receiving more votes than the other nominee, Anneliese Dodds, the Labour MP for Oxford East and Birmingham Edgbaston.
Mrs Bailey's partner, Finn McGoldrick (Labour, Norcot), became lead councillor for environmental services and community safety for Reading Borough Council in May. As lead councillor, she has responsibility for the council's policies, partnerships and actions aimed at reducing crime, including initiatives aimed at tackling violence against women and girls.
