Woodley Primary School Excels in Ofsted Report

Beechwood primary on Ambleside Close in Woodley was inspected on 23 June 2026 and praised for creating a "happy, nurturing and inclusive school".

Inspectors found safeguarding arrangements effective. Pupils feel safe, behave well and respond to the schools values of "Explore, Discover and Achieve".

The report says leaders have built a broad, ambitious curriculum with a strong focus on early reading. Children make a strong start in Reception and pupils generally make good progress, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

Staff support children who join during the year, including those arriving from other countries, to help close gaps in learning. The report also notes areas to improve.

Leaders were asked to improve older pupils handwriting, spelling and sentence construction so they can write with greater fluency and accuracy. Ofsted also said staff should more consistently identify and address pupils errors and misconceptions.

Attendance has improved and persistent absence is falling, but it remains variable for a small number of pupils, including some who are disadvantaged or have special educational needs. The school has been asked to continue working with families and external agencies to boost regular attendance.

Inspectors highlighted calm behaviour, saying incidents of bullying and discriminatory behaviour are rare. Pupils enjoy clubs such as tennis, science, drama and choir, and visits to museums and the Living Rainforest.

Leaders and governors are described as committed and ambitious, and parents are reported to be very positive. The school has undergone "significant change" since its previous inspection; new co-headteachers Rachel Minter and Sarah Reece were promoted in April 2026.

Beechwood had 295 pupils at the time of inspection and is part of the LDBS Frays Academy Trust. Ofsted said pupils were proud to attend and valued its "calm, caring environment", and that most pupils achieve well and are "typically well prepared for the next stage of their education".
