Debate Sparks Over Yateley Road Speed Limit

A petition asks Bracknell Forest to extend the 30mph limit on Yateley Road in Sandhurst south from the River Blackwater bridge to the A321 High Street, arguing the current 60mph limit no longer reflects how the road is used, citing nearby Jake's Playbarn, a nursery, pedestrians and turning traffic.

Labour town councillor Diane Wilson backed the idea: "It does seem to be a sensible idea."

Conservative Dale Birch urged caution, saying any change must be evidence-led. "Petitions are not always effective particularly where the request requires significant technical knowledge in order to understand the impact." He said traffic surveys and injury collision data will be decisive and that the road currently meets national speed-limit criteria.

Liberal Democrat Mike Forster said he will ask the council highways department for data. "As a resident of Sandhurst I am familiar with Yateley Road and the busy traffic on it."

Cllr Birch also pointed to planning constraints on the route, including a Local Wildlife Site designation, making further development-and a stronger urban-style case for 30mph-unlikely. He added that if a technical review supports a 30mph restriction, it should be supported.

Introducing 30mph on rural roads without physical traffic calming has been uncommon. Department for Transport guidance says such limits work best where average speeds are already low, while measures like speed bumps are costly and impractical on narrow country roads.

Alternatives such as "quiet lanes" may offer lower-speed expectations without heavy engineering. The council's next step is whether traffic and safety evidence justifies a formal review and which model fits the road's changing role.
