A showdown is looming over a plan to add an extra day to Reading Festival.
The festival normally runs Friday to Sunday over the August Bank Holiday. This year Charli XCX, rapper Dave and Chase & Status are the headliners.
Organisers Festival Republic have applied to vary the licence to allow main stage performances from 5pm to midnight - similar to Glastonbury - and to sell alcohol in the arena from 11am on Wednesday to 3am on Thursday, with day sales 10am to 5pm.
Two residents' groups across the Thames in Caversham - the Warren & District Residents Association (WADRA) and the Caversham and District Residents Association (CADRA) - have objected, citing worries about extra noise and drinking.
WADRA chair Elisa Miles said: "WADRA is not opposed to Reading Festival."
She added: "Thursday is a working night for most residents. Unlike the other days, many people will need to wake early on Friday for work or other commitments. Loud amplified music late into the evening will disrupt sleep for those who have no choice but to remain at home."
Malcolm Pemble of CADRA also warned the proposals could keep festival-goers on site and hit village traders, and both groups raised concerns about the extended alcohol hours.
Mr Pemble's letter states: "There will be increased noise to 3am in the morning which would appear to be unfair on residents."
He added: "CADRA would also be concerned that this may create additional welfare issues and safety issues for the festival."
Supporters say the festival brings energy and little disruption. Eoghan Collins wrote: "Please know that an extension has my full support." He also said: "I adore festival weekend."
The objections mean Reading Borough Council's licensing applications sub-committee will decide the issue at a meeting on August 18.
